Taoyuan International Airport Terminal 3
Step inside one of Taiwan’s most significant ongoing infrastructure projects. Taoyuan International Airport Terminal 3 is a major expansion of Taiwan’s principal international gateway, integrating large-scale terminal construction, complex structural and building systems, transportation facilities, and highly coordinated construction management.
This ACF 2026 Technical Visit offers participants a rare opportunity to experience the project from an engineering and construction perspective. Through a dedicated project briefing, technical Q&A, safety preparation, and guided site visit, participants will gain first-hand insight into the planning, coordination, and execution of a mega-scale airport development.
Danjiang Bridge
Rising above the mouth of the Tamsui River, the Danjiang Bridge is one of Taiwan’s most ambitious contemporary infrastructure projects and a new landmark connecting Tamsui and Bali. More than a transportation link, the bridge was conceived as a structure in which engineering, architecture, and the surrounding landscape become part of a unified design.
The landmark design was selected through an international competition in 2015. The winning proposal was developed by Zaha Hadid Architects in collaboration with Leonhardt, Andrä und Partner and Sinotech Engineering Consultants. Construction of the main bridge subsequently began in 2019, bringing one of Taiwan’s most distinctive bridge designs into reality.
The Danjiang Bridge features a distinctive single-pylon asymmetric cable-stayed system. The main bridge extends approximately 920 meters, with a main span of about 450 meters supported by a slender pylon rising approximately 200 meters above the river.
The single-pylon configuration responds not only to structural and transportation requirements, but also to the sensitive setting of the Tamsui River estuary. By concentrating the main vertical element into one carefully positioned tower, the design minimizes visual obstruction and preserves the openness of the river landscape.
One of the most memorable ideas behind the Danjiang Bridge is the image of a “silent dancer.” The elegant form of the pylon evokes the poised movement of a dancer, while its upward-reaching geometry has been compared to hands joined together in blessing. The sweeping lines of the bridge and cables further reinforce this sense of rhythm, movement, and lightness.
Rather than treating the bridge as an isolated engineering object, the design was developed in close dialogue with the surrounding scenery. Its form and position were carefully considered to preserve views toward Guanyin Mountain and the famous Tamsui sunset, allowing the bridge to become part of the landscape itself.
The Tamsui River estuary is celebrated for its broad horizon, mountain backdrop, and dramatic evening light. The Danjiang Bridge was therefore designed not only to cross the river, but also to frame and enhance this landscape. Its slender tower, sweeping cables, and long horizontal deck create a changing silhouette throughout the day, becoming especially striking as the sun sets over the river.
During the ACF 2026 Technical Visit, participants will first receive a dedicated project briefing introducing the bridge’s planning, structural concept, construction, and engineering significance. The program will then continue with an on-site visit, offering a close-up perspective of the bridge and its relationship with the surrounding Tamsui landscape.
The visit is scheduled to conclude near sunset, giving participants a unique opportunity to experience firsthand the interaction between structure, architecture, river, mountains, and light that shaped the original design concept.
CHI PO LIN Museum & Tamsui Old Town
The final part of the ACF 2026 Technical Visit brings together landscape, environment, history, and culture. Participants will visit the CHI PO LIN Museum to rediscover Taiwan from above, followed by time in Tamsui Old Town, one of northern Taiwan’s most distinctive historic waterfront districts.
Chi Po-lin was one of Taiwan’s most influential aerial photographers and documentary filmmakers. Through decades of aerial photography, he documented Taiwan’s mountains, rivers, coastlines, cities, infrastructure, and environmental transformation from a perspective rarely seen from the ground.
His landmark 2013 documentary Beyond Beauty: Taiwan from Above (看見台灣) revealed both the extraordinary beauty of Taiwan and the environmental impact of development and human activity. The film helped transform environmental issues into images that people could directly see, understand, and connect with.
For engineers, this aerial perspective is especially meaningful: roads, bridges, buildings, cities, rivers, and coastlines are no longer isolated objects, but parts of one interconnected landscape. The museum therefore offers an opportunity to reflect on not only what we build, but how engineering shapes the land around us.
Located at the mouth of the Tamsui River, Tamsui developed as an important trading port and maritime gateway. Its historic streets, temples, old merchant buildings, and waterfront preserve layers of Taiwan’s history and international exchange.
Surrounded by river, mountains, and sea, Tamsui offers a relaxed conclusion to the day—bringing together historic urban fabric, waterfront scenery, local culture, and everyday life after a full day of engineering and infrastructure exploration.
